ROYAL MOUGINS GOLF CLUB

The following article is from the Royal Mougins Golf Club Newsletter. Royal Mougins is located in the South of France near Cannes. Royal Mougins has been a source of pride for us since it orginally opened in 1993. It hosted the "Air France/Royal Mougins Open" for three years after opening. In 2003, the club was purchased by Mr. Rattan Chadha, the owner of fashion label MEXX.

The person with the most in-depth knowledge of the Royal Mougins Golf
Course is probably Rick Baril.

Cet Américain de 49 ans a passé presque la moitié de sa vie à travailler avec Robert von Hagge, supervisant la construction de golfs en Europe, au Mexique et aux Etats-Unis. «A ce jour, nous avons 14 parcours en Europe», nous précise-t-il, «et plusieurs autres en phase d’études. Le principal problème auquel nous avons été confrontés lorsque nous avons construit le parcours du Royal Mougins fut le dessin naturel du paysage et l’espace très limité sur lequel nous avons dû travailler», poursuit Rick. «La clé de réussite de l’ensemble de ce projet était la localisation du premier trou. Le résultat final est ce parcours dont nous sommes extrêmement fiers, pour son dessin et pour ses qualités techniques et de jeu».

Durant les deux dernières années, le parcours a traversé une période d’incroyable métamorphose, cela pour recouvrer aujourd’hui sa gloire d’antan. «Grâce au formidable green keeper, Benoit, et à son équipe, mais aussi grâce à un consultant talentueux - Robin de Vooght - et à une Direction toute entière dévouée à son Club et, enfin, grâce à bien d’autres personnes, nous avons même accompli des progrès que nous ne pouvions initialement pas espérer», déclare Rick, «... Nous faisons encore face à quelques défis et le green du 12ème trou n’est pas le moindre d’entre eux. Plusieurs solutions sont actuellement étudiées. L’une d’entre elles consisterait à installer un dispositif d’air conditionné sous-terrain comme en disposent certains trous d’Augusta. Mais, plus probablement, nous devrions nous acheminer vers la solution qui consisterait à mettre en place des ventilateurs électriques dans les arbres, à l’arrière du green. Ainsi, nous pourrions recréer un important mouvement d’air au niveau du sol. Cela n’aurait que très peu d’impact sur le jeu sachant que ces ventilateurs ne seraient utilisés qu’en juillet et août, et la plupart du temps en soirée lorsque le vent naturel faiblit.»

« Soyez assurés que nous relèverons avec brio tous les challenges auxquels nous ferons face et une solution sera trouvée à chaque problème, car Rattan Chadha nous a demandé de lui garantir le meilleur résultat, et cela sans compromis. « Réalisez cet objectif ! » nous a-t-il dit, et nous lui avons alors promis de concrétiser cette volonté en trois ans.

The 49-year old American has spent almost half his life working with Robert von Hagge, managing golf-building sites in Europe, Mexico and the US. “- We now have 14 courses in
Europe,” he tells us, “– but several more are under way.

The main challenge when we originally built the Royal Mougins course was the natural lay-out of the landscape and the very limited space we had to work with. The key that made the whole project possible was actually the location of the first hole. The end result is a course that we are extremely proud of, as it is entertaining, visually strong and very technical all at the same time.”

For the past two years the course has undergone an almost unbelievable metamorphosis, to the extent that it has today regained part of its former glory. “- Thanks to a great greenkeeper
like Benoît and his team, a very talented consultant, Robin de Vooght, a dedicated management
team and many others we have made even better progress than we could hope for,” Rick continues,“- but we are not there yet. We still face a few challenges, not the least the green on the 12th hole. Several solutions are being studied, one of which being an underground air-conditioning system like they have on certain holes at Augusta. Most likely, however, we shall mount a couple of electrical fans in the trees behind the green, so we can create the all- important air movement at ground level. There will be very little impact on the game, as the fans will only be in use during July and August, and mostly in the evenings, when the wind tends to die.”

“But you may rest assured that all remaining challenges will be met and every problem solved,
because Rattan Chadha has asked us to give him the very best, without any compromise.
“Make it happen!” he told us, and we promised to do it in three years – and we still have
one more year to go.”
